Summer Dzogchen Retreat with
Tibetan Buddhist Meditation Master
We are very pleased to announce that H. E. Dzogchen Khenpo Choga
Rinpoche will be conducting the Annual Dzogchen Summer Retreat, with
teachings on The Way of the Bodhisattva and The Buddha Path, in the beautiful mountain countryside
between Mt. Hood and the Columbia River Scenic Area, near Portland,
Oregon, USA. The Teacher: Dzogchen Khenpo Choga Rinpoche is a thirty-third
generation lineage holder of the Buddhist Lineage of Dzogchen, Professor
of Dzogchen Shri Singha University, and founder of numerous Dharma
Centers within the Dzogchen Shri Singha International organization.
He will lead the retreat and provide daily instruction to all students. The Teachings: The main subject of the teachings will be
the 7th chapter of the classic Buddhist text, Shantideva's Bodhisattvacaryavatara (The Way of the Bodhisattva), and Dzogchen
Khenpo Kunpal's sublime commentary on this text. Meditation
Practice: In addition, Rinpoche will be giving extensive
training and teachings on the recently published new edition of The Buddha Path, a concise practice manual encompassing the vast range of
the Buddha's teachings that is used in Dzogchen Shri Singha Dharma
Centers worldwide. Daily
Schedule: There will be about eight to ten hours of scheduled practice
and teaching per day. Each session will last approximately two hours.
In addition, during break times, Yoga, music, dancing, art, and Dharma
activities will be available. From 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM students are
required to maintain silence as part of their practice. Translation: Live translation of the teachings will be
offered by veteran Tibetan translator and scholar Andreas Kretschmar,
who is now translating and publishing the Bodhisattvacaryavatara
teachings in sequence. The
first four chapters of this text are now available online at: www.dzogchenlineage.com or on Andreas' website at: www.kunpal.com. The Students: All sincere Buddhist students, as well as anyone interested
in learning and practicing Buddhism, are welcome to attend this retreat. Students should be prepared to attend
at least one full week of the retreat, The Place: This year's retreat will take place at a professional retreat
facility in the beautiful Cascade Mountains of Oregon, USA. Located just 30 minutes drive from Portland
International Airport, the retreat center is adjacent to several state
parks and scenic places, including Mt. Hood and the famous waterfalls
of the Columbia River Scenic areas. Accommodations: For the first 40 registered retreatants,
sleeping accommodations in bunk beds in rooms of 4 to 8 people will
be available. The center
will provide sheets, pillows, pillowcases and blankets for the first
40 retreatants only. Retreatants who prefer, or anyone in
excess of the first 40 retreatants, will also be able to camp on
the retreat property. All students must reside at the retreat
facility for the course of their retreat. Food: Three mostly vegetarian meals will be served
each day, and tea and water will be available at all times. The cost of meals is included in the
cost of the retreat, and the kitchen will not be open to private
food preparation. Please
let us know any specific questions. Students
should take care to bring all of their own medicines, and prepare
for any individual dietary needs. Costs: Teachings will be offered free of charge,
with the cost of the retreat covering only the students' food and
lodging and incidental expenses. The retreat, from Sunday July 4 to Sunday
July 25, will be a total
of 3 weeks in length. Students
may register for any one week (from Sunday to the following Saturday)
session, or for as many consecutive sessions as they wish. The cost of the retreat will include both food and lodging
for all attendees, and will be based on a minimum one week commitment. The cost of the retreat, including food
and lodging, will be as follows: Any One Week: US$350 Any Two Consecutive Weeks: US$650 Three Weeks: US$850 Retreat
Discounts: We hope that everyone will recognize that
the retreat cost published here is very low, especially in comparison
with similar events elsewhere. There
is no cost at all for the teachings, and the published costs are
intended only to cover our actual costs for the retreat. Because of this, we are unable at this time to offer any type of discount
on the above retreat costs. This
means that we are not offering discounts for students who prefer
to camp rather than sleep in the retreat center, or who want to prepare
their own meals rather than eat scheduled meals with the other retreatants,
or who want to work for the retreat rather than attend as a paying
attendee. The only exception to this will be for
any ordained monks or nuns who would like to attend the retreat. The reason we are doing this is that
since this year's retreat is at a rented facility with fixed costs,
we have to cover our basic costs before we can offer any kind of
discount to anyone. Nevertheless, it is our intention that any sincere student
intending to attend the retreat should be able to attend. Students who are unable to afford the
published costs of the retreat should make this fact known on their
application. These students,
in the order that their applications are received, will be put on
a waiting list. Then,
about June 20, and based on the number of full-paying registered
retreatants that we are able to book, these students be advised of
what cost or discount we are able to offer on the published retreat
price. It is not however certain that any such discount will be
available, or that we will be able to accommodate any students of
this type. We will just
do our best. For this
reason, it is important that any students requiring a discount on
the published cost of the retreat should register as soon as possible
to secure a preferential place on the retreat waiting list. Transportation: Attendees should provide their own transportation
to and from, and while resident at, the retreat. People arriving by air should book flights
to Portland International Airport, Oregon. The retreat center is approximately 30 minutes drive from
the airport. Registration: The registration of each student will proceed
following acceptance of the student's registration application. Due
to limitations imposed by our accommodations only a limited number
of students will be able to attend. We need to process as many applications, and receive deposits, as
early as possible in order to prepare and budget for the retreat. Retreatants need to apply early in order
to reserve limited attendance and bed space, as well as to secure
their choice of rooms. Students
intending to bring under-age children to the retreat should contact
the organizers to discuss their needs before submitting their application. To apply for registration, please fill out
and return to the Dzogchen Buddha Foundation a registration application
form downloadable below as a PDF or a Word document. Conclusion: Since we already have many pre-registered students this year,
we strongly encourage and dearly request that all intending participants
inform us as early as possible by returning their completed registration
application. This will
be extremely helpful to us, and will definitely benefit you and all
other attendees as well. Many
Dharma Blessings, Contact
