Teaching on the Madhyamika, The Middle
Way
Madyamika
is a Mahayana Buddhist School whose doctrines
are based on the notion
that all phenomena is fundamentally void
of inherent existence. Nagarjuna is considered
to be the founder of the tradition, and
his "Sixty Stanza's of Reasoning" will
be the basis of Dzogchen Khenpo Choga
Rinpoche's teaching.

Dzogchen
Khenpo Choga Rinpoche returns to Seattle
on June 20th to hold a Refuge Ceremony
and Beginning Practice Session for
the newly formed Seattle-area Dzogchen
Practice Group. This will be the first
practice session for this group, which
intends to meet every week moving forward.
Taking Refuge is
a ceremony where a practitioner
promises to take protective shelter in
Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, which altogether
are known as the Three Jewels. If you
choose to participate in a refuge ceremony,
the Master asks you to recite your promises
to trust in, and have certainty in the
Three Jewels. This is a beautiful Tibetan
ritual where one receives many blessings
from the Master.
For the conclusion of
the ceremony, it is traditional for the
student to bring or borrow a kata (a
Tibetan greeting scarf, usually made
of silk) which you present to the teacher.
The teacher may keep the kata, or give
it back by placing it around the student's
neck. At this point, it is also Buddhist
custom that
one offers a gift to the teacher. This
gift can be something precious, a thoughtful
present, or a donation placed in an envelope.
It is always placed on the table next
to the teacher rather than handed directly.
Then the master might offer you
some holy water or blessed medicine to
take, or some other token of exchange.
At the very end it is common for the
Master to tap the student's head with
a holy book, and you may briefly converse
with the teacher if you like. It is
not essential that you have a kata
to take refuge or to receive a blessing,
it is simply a beautiful ritual. If you'd
like to purchase a kata ahead of time,
they can be found at any Tibetan store.
Two such stores in Seattle area are Lhasa
located on University in the University
district between 45th and 50th, and Pema
Kharpa, located at 8554 Greenwood Ave.
